About the role

RADIUS INSTITUTE FOR ROAD SAFETY

Providing local data, evidence-based insights, and hands-on technical assistance to end road traffic deaths and serious injuries.

THE PROBLEM

1.2 MILLION DEATHS ANNUALLY

#1 KILLER OF CHILDREN & YOUNG PEOPLE

$3.6T USD LOST ANNUALLY

Road traffic crashes are huge problem globally. Road traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for children and young people aged 5 to 29 worldwide. Each year, 1.2 million lives are lost, and 50 million individuals are seriously injured—exceeding even the combined toll of HIV/AIDS and malaria. Low- and middle-income countries are most severely affected, accounting for 92% of global traffic-related fatalities while having only 60% of the world's vehicles. The economic impact is staggering, with an estimated annual loss of $3.6 trillion USD. In some of the hardest-hit countries, road crashes can cost as much as 6% of their GDP each year.

Moreover, the actual situation may be even worse due to widespread underreporting of traffic incidents, which can range from 50% to 80% in statistics from low-income countries.

OUR SOLUTION

We create political will for changes in road safety policy by plugging gaps in governmental capacity and data.

We provide evidence-based best practice research and guidance, support for local data collection and collation, and partner with local governments to implement small-scale pilots. These activities help demonstrate the efficacy of locally tailored solutions as the building blocks for national policy change.
